Every year, all over the nation, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosts hundreds of walks nation-wide to raise awareness about and funds for suicide prevention. Magnified Voices, along with numerous other community members, showed up in solidarity for this community advocacy event. According to the CDC, in the US, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death and there are numerous other attempts. There are ways to help and sending a strong message that suicide can be prevented, we are in this together, and nobody is alone, is important to further the cause.
Money raised at these events make a direct impact on people’s lives. It brings mental health education programs to schools, trains advocates on public policy priorities, trains facilitators for survivors of suicide loss support groups, fund research, and provides youth suicide prevention and outreach programming.
“The Out of the Darkness Walks have helped me, and so many others, realize that together, we can fight to prevent suicide, and end the stigma that leads people to believe asking for help is a weakness.”
